Apps and Extensions for Chrome

Here are my choices for improving the look and productivity of Google Chrome. I will admit I have never really bothered with Chrome extensions or apps, but recently found myself adding a handful and finding them very useful. I will update this post if I find any more apps and extensions that are worthy of your attention.

Installation for all these Apps and Extensions is as easy as finding them on the Google Store and clicking Add to Chrome and that’s it.

I  have placed my choices into categories as follows:

If you have any other suggestions for me please leave a comment below.

Anchor: Aesthetics

Morpheon Dark

There are many, many themes available for Chrome, and I obviously haven’t tried them all. But what I wanted was a simple and effective alternative to the white standard look. I wanted a black looking theme and eventually settled on Morpheon Dark, This a black theme at it’s simplest, without distracting branding, backgrounds, images, or logos. Works at all resolutions in Linux, OSX, Windows, and Chrome OS.

Momentum is a new tab overhaul, and it is beautiful and very useful. New Tab page gives you a moment of calm and inspires you to be more productive. Set a daily focus, track your to-dos, and get inspired with a daily photo and quote. Eliminate distractions and beat procrastination with a reminder of your focus for the day on every new tab load. The settings is found in a new tab at the bottom left hand corner. I really like the option to add your most used links into Momentum for fast access, keeping your bookmarks bar cleaner.

The button shows an orange plus sign whenever there are events on the page you’re viewing that can be added to your calendar.

• Displays events from your selected calendars.
• Quick Add: When adding events, you no longer need to specify a time separately. Type events such as:
— “Dinner with Sam at 8pm Sunday”, or
— “Vacation from Dec 25 to Dec 31”
• If you’re on certain sites where it detects the presence of events, the icon changes to an orange “+”. Clicking that icon lets you add the event to your Google Calendar, and shows you a map (if there’s a location it could detect.)
• Any site that uses the hCalendar microformat or derivative microformats such as hResume are supported.
• This extension shows events from whatever calendars you are logged in within Chrome.

Downloads Router

Downloads Router

Organize your downloads automatically! Set custom download locations based on file type, filename, or source domain.
Latest news:
☆ Torrent files downloaded as octet-streams now trigger application/x-bittorrent MIME routing rules
☆ Referrer routing now uses the source URL as a fallback, improving reliability

Downloads Router is a tiny extension that helps you avoid cleaning the dreaded “Downloads” folder by automatically saving files in the right places.

Downloads Router springs into action whenever you start downloading a file. It looks at the filename, filetype, or origin domain (source website) of the item, and matches this information against rules that you define on the extension’s Options page. Should a matching rule exist, a “suggestion” is sent to the browser, indicating where it should save the file; this suggestion may however be overridden, as for instance when you use the “Save As…” feature.

The Options page opens automatically after installing the extension, and may thereafter be reached from the chrome://extensions page.

Anchor: Imagery

Save Image Router

Save Image Router

Save images to custom locations from the context menu.
This extension allows you to save images on a web page to custom save locations directly from the right-click context menu.
Chrome allows saving files only within the configured downloads location. All the configured directories will go under the downloads location of Chrome. E.g. directory `Nature` will become `/Users/name/Downloads/Nature` when `/Users/name/Downloads` is the configured download location in Chrome.

If the browser keeps opening the save dialog, make sure to uncheck “Ask where to save each file before downloading” in Chrome settings.

Use slash (`/`) for sub-directories. Empty directory will go to the Chrome download location directly.

Directory names may not contain these characters: ? : ~ ” < > * | \

You could just use Downloads Router from above, but I have found this useful alongside it.

Whenever you find yourself with too many tabs, click the OneTab icon to convert all of your tabs into a list. When you need to access the tabs again, you can either restore them individually or all at once.

When your tabs are in the OneTab list, you will save up to 95% of memory because you will have reduced the number of tabs open in Google Chrome.

Privacy assurance

Information about your tabs are never transmitted or disclosed to either the OneTab developers or any other party. The only exception to this is if you intentionally click on our ‘share as a web page’ feature that allows you to upload your list of tabs into a web page in order to share them with others. Tabs are never shared unless you specifically use the ‘share as a web page’ button.

Additional Benefits

Depending on how many scripts are running inside your tabs, moving them to OneTab can also speed up your computer by reducing the CPU load. We have also had reports that this also contributes to your computer resuming from sleep more quickly.

The Great Suspender

The Great Suspender

Automatically suspends unused tabs to free up system resources
16/09/2015: New version 6.21 released.
Bug fixes: Tabs no longer suspend with wrong url. Fixed ‘suspend other tabs’ button
New features: Dark theme for night crawlers. Improved whitelist with regex support. Suspend actions can now be performed on groups of highlighted tabs.
Please report any issues here:
Unload, park, suspend tabs to reduce memory footprint of chrome.
Tabs can auto-suspend after a configurable period of time or be suspended manually. Tabs can be whitelisted to avoid automatic suspension. Suspended tabs are retained after closing and reopening browser, preventing many tabs from all reloading after a restart. Very simple, intuitive interface.

The Great Suspender is a lightweight chrome extension to help reduce chrome’s memory footprint for users that like to have too many tabs open at the same time. This extension will automagically unload each tab while retaining its favicon and title text. A tab can be restored by clicking anywhere on the page when it is needed. This reduces the number of dom elements on the page and ensures no memory leaks or excessive javascripts are running.

Web of Trust (aka WOT) is an outstanding website reputation rating tool that helps you make informed decisions about whether to trust a website or not when you are searching, shopping or browsing online.

WOT extension shows website reputations as traffic lights next to search results when you use Google, Yahoo! These icons are also visible next to links in social networking websites like Facebook and Twitter; Email services like Gmail and Yahoo!Mail; as well as popular websites like Wikipedia.

By clicking the traffic light icon you can find out more about a website’s reputation, safety information and users’ opinions. We live in a connected world. When you browse the web, your data leaves a digital footprint. This footprint, connected by tracking technologies (called trackers), helps companies build a profile about you and how you interact with their sites and their competitors, allowing them to optimize their communications and site experience to reach you – and others like you – at the right place, at the right time.

Ghostery gives you the control to make informed decisions about the personal data you share with the trackers on the sites you visit.

Enjoy a faster web
Some sites take too long to load. This can be due to trackers weighing your system down. Ghostery allows you to block the offending trackers and significantly speed up your browsing.

Get the content you want
Remove page clutter so you can focus on the content you want.

Control your data
Sometimes being connected can help you find the data you need quicker, like a location tracker that helps you find the closest cafe. Sometimes it spoils the fun, like a remarketing tracker, revealing the birthday present you wanted kept a surprise. Ghostery makes locking down your data easier.

Be Informed, Take Control
Ghostery gives you the tools needed to understand the different types of trackers and how they may impact your overall browsing experience, putting the power directly in your hands.

Open World PC Gaming

I have been a long time player of video games starting with the AtariST. When the open world genre really started to take off I fell in love with it, especially Dayz mod. On the back of the mod I started a website called Dayz Dose which followed the development of the game. Buty then more and more great open world games started to be released and so I closed Dayz Dose and started Open World PC Gaming. We now cover hand picked open world games alongside interesting subjects like science, space, CGI, short films and more. I am always looking out for like minded creative people to help contribute to the site, if that's you please get in touch.

Very informative post indeed. All the extensions seem to be useful for users. Although, some of them I already know about like Adblock Plus and Avast. I have recently found a way through which people can recover their revenue easily. is a program through which one can block useless ads but at the same time it doesn’t harness your ads traffic.

    Thanks for sharing it. 🙂
